A little something I'm trying.

Published over 2 years ago • 2 min read

Hey there.

Well, I kind of wanted to start this little dispatch off with a bang, but I keep staring at my screen and thinking, maybe that's not it today. Doesn't this pretty new color scheme just make you feel all chill too?

The reality is, I am operating at a fairly strong balance of both chill and bang these days. There's a lot going on, the days are flying by, I have many things to be excited about. But I'm opting to use the moments in between the frantic activity, the unassigned time in my days, to mostly do...not much.

It's a little something I'm trying.

I told a friend today in one minute about how stressed I am about my job search, looming decisions, anticipation, worry. And in the next minute, I told her that all I planned on doing today after my 8am interview was wandering around Hobby Lobby, making soap, puttering around the house, potentially playing with writing this email if I felt like it, taking a Peloton ride later.

No big, long, detailed, focused task list. No rushing to fill the empty spaces or moments with productivity. No I should do this and that and the other fourteen things while I have the free day. Sure, those things flash through my mind, but not acting on them every single time?

It's a little something I'm trying.

I wonder if it's something you might be interested in trying too. What do you think? I mean, it takes practice - and some trying and failing - not to fill up every chill moment with something (including reading or turning on a podcast or scrolling your social media, which I recently said bye-bye to again because my God, just no). But it's very, very worth it. What a gift to just be with yourself.

It's a little something I'm trying.

Shifting gears, you may have noticed I'm trying a little something in this space too - visually, obviously, but likely in content soon too. I just don't know what it's all going to look like in the coming months with a likely drinking-from-a-fire-hose kind of onboarding on the horizon. I may have so many wonderful, thoughtful insights for you (a la circa 2014-2018 email missives from me - the best of the archives for sure), or I may be nearly unable to catch a breath beyond sharing a few notes about the week, a quick story, or something I'm currently loving. But I don't want to lose this completely.

And so, I'm not going to lose it, and neither are you. Even if the shape shifts, this weekly email will not ever completely disappear into the void of lost internet souls. I promise, you can still count on me for a great question or reflection, a story, a helpful resource, a terrible joke, a fabulous book recommendation, and a somewhat prompt and definitely personal reply.

Life and circumstances and feelings and people are ever-changing. I've always believed that, trusted the flow, embraced growth and change. But jumping two feet in to the peace and the rest and the fun that my most recent, aligned choices have given me...well...

It's a little something I'm trying.

I hope you'll think about enjoying (or possibly even *gasp* creating) some empty moments and the peace and rest and fun they can bring. And I hope you'll stick around for the next dispatch.

To trying a little something,

Kourtney

Oh hi! I’m alive! You’re alive! We’re all alive here together! Which, actually, is exactly what brings me to the meat of this little note. Normally, I’d have anywhere from 15-20 book recommendations for you per quarter. In Q2 though? Um, I’ve got nine. And it’s because I’ve been out there being Alive, Capital A. Honestly, not mad about it. Not mad about these books I did end up finishing either. (Well, I say that…the last one was a little meh, but sometimes it happens.) So hey, I know we’re...

I have never been an inbox zero type of person. Pretty par for the course with how I’ve always saved a lot of physical things in my life, I save emails thinking I’ll need them one day. (Isn’t that what we always say?) I don’t organize my inbox either—that’s what the search function is for. For the last twelve years or so, that’s worked out pretty well for me. I have everything I need. If I need to find it in a particular moment, I just search for a sender or a keyword and voila, I’m in...

The very first fitness certification I ever got, even before my personal training cert, was Spinning. It took me about three classes to fall head over heels in love with indoor cycling, and I knew I wanted to teach it and provide that experience to other people too. No wonder, a dozen years later, I still put it at the top of my list. As she gazes lovingly at her Peloton bike. Anyway, the training to be a Spinning instructor is pretty specific and in-depth. It’s not just, like, turn the...
